Beverly (Bunn) Cleary was born on April 12th 1916 in McMinnville, Oregon. In 1922 she moved from Yamhill, Oregon to Portland, Oregon. Beverly began working as a librarian in 1940 and noticed children found many of the books outdated and unrelatable. She decided to do something about this by writing books the children would find interesting.
Cleary has won a National Book Award, a Newbery Medal (1984 for Dear Mr. Henshaw) and a National Medal of Art from the National Endowment of the Arts, among other accolades. In 2000, the Library of Congress gave her a Living Legend Award. Cleary’s last book was “Ramona’s World,” published in 1999.
